Behind the Mic: Creating The Curated Nest Podcast – Season One
I’ve always loved chatting to other creative people — whether at open studios, teaching workshops, networking, or even on social media. For years, I put off starting a podcast because I told myself it was too much. But when I was interviewed by another creative for her blog, the idea came up, and she encouraged me to go for it. And just like that, The Curated Nest Podcast was born.
The podcast is all about what makes a house a home. Each week, I sit down with a different guest and ask them:
What’s your favourite thing about your home?
What turned it from a house into a home?
Do you have a favourite piece of art or accessory in your home?
What’s your favourite room?
Where is your happy place?
What would your dream home be like — the setting, rooms, garden?
I also ask a fun Quick Fire round: Classic or modern? Maximalist or minimalist? Country or city? Swimming pool or games room? Chef or cleaner?
It’s been a fantastic way to get people to open up about what makes their home special and how it fits into their lives.
Season One Highlights
Here’s a peek at the incredible guests from Season One and some standout moments from our chats:
1. Jill Whitehouse – Solution-Focused Hypnotherapist, Inspired to Change Newcastle
Jill spoke about turning a blank canvas into a happy home, adding curated pieces over time, and the emotional journey of making a house feel safe. Highlights included balancing workspace and living space, the joy of the ever-changing North East coastline, and her party kitchen that perfectly connects inside and outside. (Also, meet Percy the Polar Bear!)
2. Lauren Deakin – Designer and Founder of Dopamine Design Co
Lauren shared the stories behind her vintage pieces, the joy of colour, and how to make a rental feel like home. We explored the importance of balance and ways to inject personality into every space.
3. Aoife Forbes – Gift Wrap Specialist, Forbes Finishings
Aoife reminded us of the value of individuality in a home, distinguishing between hoarding and collecting, and even having a loo that doubles as a guest book! We also chatted about how clutter can interrupt mental space.
4. Kimberli Werner – Abstract Expressionist Artist
Kimberli talked about moving across the Atlantic to start fresh, working with stunning full-height windows, and adding new stories to a building rich with community history. Inspiration, she said, is everywhere.
5. Brenda Kilgallon – Change Strategist & Coach
Brenda reflected on the importance of space and quiet, the concept of a forever home, living in a gallery-like space, and the joy of walled gardens. She also shared how visualising her happy place helps her sleep.
6. Anke Rainbow – Artist & Jewellery Maker
Anke highlighted the simple joys of comfort, the impact of views on wellbeing, and how art can document life stages. Nostalgia and personal stories were at the heart of our conversation.
Behind the Scenes
Hosting Season One felt more natural than I ever imagined. It was wonderful to speak to such a range of incredible women (though I didn’t plan it that way — it just happened!). Hearing about people’s heirlooms and home priorities was fascinating. Interestingly, most guests chose “cleaner” in the Quick Fire, but the other questions revealed a real focus on spending time with people and enjoying experiences over chores. I was told I’m a great listener - which, for me, made the conversations even more rewarding.
