Using Art as a Starting Point For Home Decor
Redecorating is either something that you trust your instincts on or something that you dread. If you are in the latter camp then this blog is for you! You’ll also love The Curated Nest magazine - a free digital interiors inspiration magazine (Get it here).
There are many ways to start putting together a scheme for a room. Here I am proposing (surprise surprise) that you start with art. We often have an emotional gut reaction when we see a piece of art that we love. We choose it because it makes us feel something. That instinct can be the starting point for your whole room set up.
How to Select Your Palette
From the piece of art, you pull out the main colours - aim for 2 or 3. This creates a harmonious feel to your space. Here are some examples…
Choose one colour to be the main backdrop of the room and use the others as accents. For anyone feeling unsure, try the 60-30-10 rule. 60% is the main colour, for example the deep green from photo 2. 30% could be the silver - perhaps the main pieces of furniture in greys and silver tones. Lilac would be the unexpected colour pop in 10% of the accessories - think frames, a cushion or a couple of lamps.
Take the 60-30-10 ‘rule’ with a pinch of salt. It’s there to guide not to restrict. If you find pieces with other colours that you love in the space then add them. Remember that you are creating a home - not a show home and not a house for resale. We are adding your personality and making your paradise so that you can reenergise and feel at your best.
An Alternative Approach
If you’re not into matchy-matchy decor then take inspiration from the colour wheel (see an example from Canva below) and go for colours on the opposite side to the main colour of the artwork. This approach makes the colours pop because of the contrast between the two hues. This can breathe more energy into a space.
