A Commission Full of Heart: Celebrating a First Anniversary Through Art

There’s something incredibly powerful about giving art as a gift. It’s personal, lasting, and made with intention — especially when it’s created just for someone you love.

When it comes to meaningful milestones, few are as symbolic as the first wedding anniversary. Traditionally known as the paper anniversary, it’s a beautiful opportunity to reflect on the first chapter of your life together and to mark it with something thoughtful and lasting. A bespoke Lino print — handmade on paper — couldn’t be more fitting.

“I didn’t know what I was looking for. I’ve never had ‘real art’ before – only the occasional print I’ve picked up at markets.

I love your colours. The way you see something and transform it into your own perspective is so beautiful.

You go above and beyond to truly see your clients. The thoughtful questions, the little conversations I’d even forgotten about – it was all part of the process, and I really loved that.

I’ve never had a service like this. It was so personal. I’m in love with the art, the book, and everything you did.

I can see how this would be a beautiful gift for families, anniversaries like ours, or birthdays.

It’s in our living room – centre stage. It will be the talking point when guests visit and something that means so much to both of us.

(We still need to hang it – I’m not trusted with the hammer, haha!)”

Being trusted with a secret commission for someone’s first anniversary is something I never take lightly. It’s intimate and emotional — a chance to honour the moments that mean the most and to create something that will carry those memories forward.

When I met with Lauren, she knew she wanted to create something special for her husband Kieran. We talked about their peaceful walks through the woods — the kind of quiet, grounding moments that shape a life together. It was clear from the start that this piece needed to evoke that feeling of calm connection and deep love.

We discussed colours, textures, their favourite places, and the season that feels most like them. I asked Lauren where she pictured the artwork hanging, how she wanted the room to feel, and what kind of mood she wanted to come home to. Every answer became a thread woven into the final piece — from the palette and subject matter right down to the tiniest details hand-carved into the lino block.

Creating art like this is always a labour of love — but when it’s a one-off, the attention to detail becomes everything. There’s no template. No shortcuts. These pieces are as unique as the people commissioning them.

It’s a complete joy to present the final artwork and see that moment of connection — when it lands just right and becomes more than decoration. It becomes a memory made tangible.

Happy anniversary, Lauren and Kieran. May your walks together continue for many joyful years to come.

If you’re considering a one-of-a-kind gift to mark something special — an anniversary, milestone birthday or just because — my commission calls are always free. I’d love to help you create something that feels truly yours.
