Creating ‘Birch Trees in Bluebell Woods’ - an artist’s process
New original, ‘Birch Trees in Bluebell Woods’ is a celebration of that moment when you take a walk and realise that spring has finally arrived. The bluebells have emerged and are stretching out to create a gorgeous carpet of powder blue and the light is streaming in through the trees, bouncing off the silver bark of the birch trees.
What a moment!
Inspired by the wonder of the time of year when the bulbs appear in carpets across woods and gardens are bringing much needed colour to what has felt like the grey of winter. With silver bark gleaming and greens bringing the lushness of the season, it really is a joy.
I want you to be able to sit back and let your eyes wander taking you back to spring whatever the time of year.
The Making Process
This print was created using the Lino reduction print process, more Lino is carved away after each layer of ink rendering the block unusable in future. Because of this, the edition can never be reprinted.
Layer 1 - brown
It’s not a colour that I love and it shows through very little but I wanted the texture of the bark bumps to be in stark contrast to the silvery smoothness of the majority of the trunk.
Layer 2 - silver
The glory of the shimmering trunks of the silver birch started to emerge.
Layer 3 - teal and light purple
I applied these colours with two different brayers (rollers). The teal is there to add variation to the leaves and the light purple becomes the bluebell carpet.
Layer 4 - ombré green blend
I love a blended ink application. On this piece, it ties the whole thing together and connects the foliage of the trees with the stems and leaves of the bluebells.
All that remains after this is to leave it to cure and then sign each piece. There are only 14 of these gorgeous originals with super luxe metallic sheen (I am absolutely in love with these inks).
